North Canterbury Rehabilitation Centre provide a 24/7 rehabilitation environment with the sole focus of enabling people to resume life as independently as possible.

Who we are

Since August 2014, Hartfield Physio Ltd (HPL) has been providing a range of rehabilitation services in North Canterbury. These include home-based physiotherapy, community exercise classes, and rehabilitation in aged residential care facilities. We deliver specialist therapy for people with medical and neurological needs, as well as exercise classes, and training for aged residential care staff.

This year, we are delighted to be going one step further for the people of North Canterbury by  opening our exciting new rehabilitation hub: the North Canterbury Rehabilitation Centre. Located in rural Ohoka, the centre opened in February 2018 in premises formerly used for residential care.

The Centre is a first for the region and Lucie Hartfield, HPL’s Managing Director, is excited by its potential to meet a real need for patients, particularly those from rural North Canterbury. “There is no other similar facility for people, who need that extra help with rehabilitation, after they have been discharged from hospital.

“We are here for anyone over the age of 18 who has been in hospital but is not quite ready to go home. You could be recovering after a heart attack or stroke, or getting back on your feet after falling and fracturing a hip.”

Our centre is staffed by a clinical nurse manager, registered nurses, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, dietitian, rehabilitation assistant, support workers and other support staff.

Lucie Hartfield

Centre Manager and Co-founder

UK-born, Lucie lives with her family in Rangiora and is a New Zealand registered physiotherapist. As Managing Director of Hartfield Physio Ltd, she has spearheaded the establishment of the North Canterbury Rehabilitation Centre.

Helping people to regain their strength, balance and independence is a key focus for Lucie, whose experience in North Canterbury is considerable. Her expertise has been put to use by a number of aged residential care providers. In Oxford and Rangiora, she leads regular exercise groups for people who have had strokes or are living with neurological conditions and she is very actively involved with the region’s falls prevention programmes.

Lucie also works with young adults who have very high needs disabilities. Additionally, she does some ACC-related intervention work and private home-based therapy.

Before moving to New Zealand in 2008, Lucie worked as a physiotherapist with a special focus on neurological rehabilitation for people with conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease or those recovering from a stroke.

•   Individualised health and wellbeing

•   Outpatient services

Everyone at the centre, including our carers, are committed to getting you home and living as independently as possible. We encourage family and whanau to get involved in your rehabilitation journey.

It’s not all hard work though. You’ll love our tasty home-cooked meals and exploring our country gardens, maybe even meeting a chook or two. We also like to have plenty of fun to make your stay with us as enjoyable as possible.
